You can make Pompeii part of your journey from Naples to Sorrento, but plan it as two transport legs plus a park visit. By local EAV train, the useful stop is Pompei Villa dei Misteri, on the Naples–Sorrento line. For a car, the stop and waiting time need to be part of the agreed offer.
The most important decision comes before you leave Naples: where will your suitcases stay while you explore?
The train route that fits the visit
From Napoli Garibaldi, take the EAV service on the Sorrento line and get off at Pompei Villa dei Misteri. The archaeological park lists that station for the Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra entrances. After your visit, return to the station for the onward Sorrento service.
Do not choose a station simply because its name contains “Pompei”. The park also lists Pompei Santuario and the mainline Pompei station for different approaches. Check the station and entrance together on the park’s official arrival page.
Before travelling, open EAV’s railway timetable page and choose L1 Napoli–Sorrento. Check the Napoli P. Garibaldi, Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri and Sorrento rows in the same direction. Read the service notices as well as the timetable; this guide does not assume that every tourist-branded service is operating.
Travelling on 30 October 2026? EAV’s notice published on 24 October announces a 24-hour strike affecting these services, with protected operating periods. Check the official strike notice for guaranteed departures before planning a Pompeii stop. Outside those periods, do not rely on the ordinary timetable alone.
What the known costs add up to
The Unico Campania fare finder returned the following EAV single fares. Choose each pair of places separately and open Corsa semplice; the EAV amount is listed separately from the general company fare.
| Item for one full-fare adult | Checked price |
|---|---|
| Napoli → Pompei, EAV single | €3.30 |
| Pompei → Sorrento, EAV single | €2.80 |
| Pompeii Express admission, ancient city | €20.00 |
| Known total for these three items | €26.10 |
That makes €52.20 for two full-fare adults or €104.40 for four, before any other costs. Add travel to Napoli Garibaldi, luggage storage if needed and the journey from Sorrento station to your accommodation. We have not verified a storage price or your final hotel journey, so those are not hidden inside the total.
The local single ticket ends when you leave the vehicle; plan separate tickets for the two legs and validate them as required before travelling. Child concessions and other eligibility rules need their own check. Unico Campania fare finder and ticket conditions.
Give the visit its own time
The €20 Pompeii Express ticket covers the ancient city; it is not a promise that you can see everything quickly. The park also offers a different ticket including suburban villas. Choose what you want to visit before arranging the pickup time.
From 15 October to 15 March, the published hours are 09:00–17:00, with last entry at 15:30. Tickets are named and allow one entry. Check the official hours and admission page for your date and any exceptions.
A late arrival can leave a short visit even if you reach the gate before last entry. Work backwards from the last entry, the time you want inside and your onward journey. If a flight or train is delayed, be prepared to continue to Sorrento and visit Pompeii on another day.
Sort out the bags before the ruins
The park’s visitor rules limit bags to 30 × 30 × 15 cm. A normal suitcase will not fit that rule. The park directs visitors with bulky luggage to storage facilities; confirm the facility’s location, opening hours, capacity and price before relying on it. Official visitor regulations.
For a car itinerary, ask whether the same vehicle waits and what the luggage arrangement is during the visit. Do not infer secure storage or continuous attendance from the words “transfer with a stop”. Keep passports, medication and valuables with you in an allowed-size bag.
Plan the stop with the right details
Your journey to Sorrento can include time for Pompeii—if the visit is part of the plan from the start. In one Naples-to-Sorrento enquiry, a traveller asked GetTransfer support about an hour at the ruins. The team explained how to include Pompeii in a new transfer request, so carriers could quote for the journey with the stop. For your own trip, add the visit length, then confirm waiting time, luggage arrangements and where to meet afterwards.
An hour mentioned in a support enquiry is not our recommended visit length. Decide what you want to see, then ask for enough waiting time to cover the visit and the walk back to the meeting point.
Put the whole journey in one message
Copy this checklist into your request: Naples pickup address and time; Pompeii entrance; time wanted inside; number and size of bags; number of passengers; pickup point after the visit; Sorrento accommodation address. Ask for the total including waiting and parking, and the charge if the visit runs longer.
That gives you something meaningful to compare with the train calculation. Our guide to comparing transfer offers explains how to check what each price actually covers.
