Chengdu Tianfu Airport to the City: Metro or Chunxi Road Bus?

For Tianfu Square, a rail route from Chengdu Tianfu Airport is Metro Line 18 to South Railway Station, then Line 1. For a hotel around Chunxi Road and IFS, compare that rail journey with the airport coach serving Chunxi Road. Follow the metro signs towards the airport’s Ground Transportation Centre (GTC) and the Terminal 1 & 2 station. A rail route to Tianfu Square changes from 18 to 1 at South Railway Station; a further Line 2 connection can serve destinations along that line. This interchange sequence appears in the UIC conference arrival guide. Use it to understand the connections, then check the current itinerary for your own destination.

For Chengdu East Railway Station, compare a journey changing to Line 7 at South Railway Station. For the southern exhibition districts, Line 18 serves Century City and Western China International Expo City on stopping services. Match the train’s stopping pattern to the station you need; a direct airport service and a train calling at intermediate stations are different choices.

The operator’s 2023 explanation of Line 18 services distinguishes direct and regular trains; it is not a current timetable. Before boarding, read the platform display for the destination and stops. For an intermediate stop, ask staff to confirm that the arriving train calls there.

Search the whole journey in the Chengdu Metro app, from 天府机场1号2号航站楼 to your final station, and check the fare there or at the ticket machine. Chunxi Road coach: fewer rail changes, a different final walk

Chunxi Road is worth checking when your accommodation is near IFS. Chengdu Daily’s 30 August 2026 report, prepared with the city bus group, identifies the official city boarding point by the IFS climbing-panda landmark and gives airport-coach fares of ¥15 by day and ¥25 at night, without an additional expressway charge.

At the airport, follow the airport-coach signs and confirm 春熙路 as the destination before buying. Ask for the next departure and which day or night tariff applies. The fare alone does not establish a departure time, and a late arrival may also leave you needing another ride from the city stop to your hotel.

For two adults, those published coach fares total ¥30 by day or ¥50 at night, before any onward journey. Compare the route from the coach stop to your hotel entrance with the walk from the nearest metro exit. A coach can remove rail changes while still leaving an inconvenient final stretch.

Payment, baggage and the last connection

Chengdu introduced metro gate payment using eligible overseas Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards, alongside UnionPay, in July 2025. The city reported the service in its September 2025 transport update. The city’s payment guide specifies a chip-enabled contactless card with small-amount PIN-free payments enabled and sufficient funds or credit. Check the accepted-card signs at the gate. If it is not accepted, use the staffed ticket point before entering.

Save your hotel’s name and address in Chinese, plus the nearest station and usable exit. With bulky bags, a pushchair or a wheelchair, check the lift route and assistance with station staff before committing to an interchange. For a late flight, plan using the time you expect to reach ground transport after baggage and arrival formalities, rather than the scheduled landing time.

When an airport pickup becomes a sightseeing day
