For a straightforward day trip, take FGC's R5 towards Manresa from Barcelona–Plaça Espanya, then change at Monistrol de Montserrat for the Cremallera rack railway to the sanctuary. FGC describes an hourly train service and about 90 minutes for the combined journey. Standard adult return train-and-rack tickets are €28.80; add admission only for the spaces you want to visit.

Choose the mountain ride before the ticket

Station name Use it for
Monistrol de Montserrat / Monistrol Enllaç R5 connection to the rack railway
Montserrat-Aeri The separate Aeri cable-car route
Monistrol Vila Rack-railway station with parking if arriving by road

For the Cremallera, stay on the R5 to Monistrol de Montserrat rather than getting off at Montserrat-Aeri. The cable car is an alternative ascent with its own station and ticket. If going up one way and down the other, check the single tickets required before buying a return product. FGC route information, sanctuary rail directions and Aeri directions.

What to budget for two or four people

The FGC/Turistren 2026 fare table lists the four-zone train + rack railway return at €28.80 for adults aged 14–65, valid through 31 December 2026. Monistrol's FGC station is in zone 4.

Standard adult tickets Return transport only With €9 Basilica tourist access each
One €28.80 €37.80
Two €57.60 €75.60
Four €115.20 €151.20

The sanctuary's ticket shop lists €9 online for Basilica tourist access, or €12 for the Throne of Our Lady and Basilica together. Choose the category that applies to you. The €12 product already includes the Basilica, so it is €12, not €12 plus €9.

Add transport to Plaça Espanya, food and any other activities. An ordinary city travel pass does not cover the rack railway or tourist funiculars. Before buying a broader combined package, compare its metro, funicular and admission inclusions with what you will actually use; avoid buying the same admission twice.

Make the visit fit the journey

FGC breaks its approximately 90-minute journey into around 60 minutes on the train, 20 on the rack railway and the transfer. Allow your hotel-to-station journey and time to find the platform as well. With an hourly service, just missing a departure can make a tightly booked visit difficult. FGC planning information.

Choose the visit you most want—Basilica, Throne, museum or time outdoors—then leave space after arriving at the sanctuary before a timed appointment. Read the admission product's entry instructions. If your transport package requires a voucher exchange, check its Plaça Espanya collection point and opening hours before choosing an early departure.

Save a workable descent before exploring

Use FGC's date-based journey planner for Barcelona–Plaça Espanya → Monistrol de Montserrat, then the reverse. Select the same date in the rack-railway timetable and pair your descent with a return R5. Save both legs and read service notices for that day. Use the current date selector; older seasonal tables can remain online.

If an activity runs late, shorten the remaining visit and ask station staff for the next workable connection. Do this before your planned descent, rather than treating an unfamiliar mountain walk as a fallback.

The rack railway is adapted for passengers with reduced mobility. The Sant Joan and Santa Cova funiculars have different access arrangements, so check the specific activity with FGC if steps matter. There is still walking at the sanctuary after a car or train arrival.

Keep the mountain railway even if you arrive by car

A useful mixed option is a road journey to Monistrol Vila, followed by the rack railway. The FGC fare table lists a standard adult rack-only return at €15; use that ticket in your calculation if you do not need the Barcelona train. If requesting a sanctuary-area drop-off instead, agree the actual point, access or parking arrangements and how you will meet for the return. Say whether the vehicle waits or comes back later.

Compare the complete group price with your transport-and-visit budget. Keep admission, funiculars and a guide separate unless explicitly included. Our offer-comparison guide helps you put those details into the request.
