For a daytime journey, Metro Line 3 takes about 61 minutes to Piraeus and costs €9 per adult. X96 runs around the clock, costs €5.50 and takes about 90 minutes in normal traffic. Both still leave the journey from the station or bus stop to your ferry’s gate. Start with the gate and boarding deadline on your ticket, then work backwards.

Evening metro works, checked 30 October 2026: from 25 October, Sunday–Thursday works break the through route later in the evening. STASY lists 21:10 as the last airport departure continuing towards Dimotiko Theatro on those work nights; later airport trains require a connection involving replacement bus X25. For a late arrival with bags, X96 is the simpler direct public-transport alternative. See the dated Line 3 notice before travelling.

First, read three things on your ferry booking

Find the port, ship and departure gate. Piraeus and Rafina are different ports. If your ticket says Rafina, use our Athens–Rafina connection guide instead of this route.

Next, find the time your ferry company requires you to be at the embarkation area. For example, Blue Star Ferries’ conditions currently require passengers there at least one hour before departure. Apply your own operator’s rule to your booking; the sailing time is not the time to arrive at the port.

If the gate is missing, ask the ferry company or ticket agent before setting out. The port authority’s passenger advice specifically tells travellers to check it and seek help when it is not shown. Avoid choosing a gate solely from the island name on an old map.

Metro or X96: compare the full public journey

Option One adult Four adults Main travel leg
Metro Line 3, when running through €9 €36 About 61 minutes by train
X96 Airport Express €5.50 €22 About 90 minutes; traffic can extend this

Add airport access, waiting and the final gate connection to the travel times above.

The public fares come from OASA’s ticket information. The table uses adult single fares. Add any separately paid local ride to your gate. A walk or the port’s eligible free shuttle does not require another transport fare; your ferry ticket remains a separate purchase.

Use Metro Line 3 for the through daytime route

Follow Trains/Metro signs to the airport railway station. Buy an airport metro ticket, not the ordinary city-only ticket. Board Line 3 towards Dimotiko Theatro and get off at Piraeus for the port connection; do not stay on to the terminus just because the destination display names it.

STASY’s route table gives about 61 minutes from Airport to Piraeus and normally a 36-minute interval on the airport section. That is train time, not a flight-to-ferry connection time. The city section’s Saturday overnight operation also does not extend to the airport. Read the works notice above if travelling in the evening.

Use X96 for a direct bus, including late arrivals

At the Arrivals level, follow Airport Express Bus signs and find X96 towards Piraeus. Check the stop display or ask staff for that route before joining a queue; several airport buses leave from the airport.

OASA describes X96 as a 24-hour route and estimates around 90 minutes, subject to traffic. For the next bus, open OASA Telematics, choose X96 and the airport-to-Piraeus direction, then check the airport stop and your travel day. If the planner is unavailable, use the airport departure display or ask at the bus ticket booth. “24-hour” describes the service span, not the wait between buses.

For full-fare contactless payment, tap your bank card once at the bus’s blue validator when boarding. For the metro, use the same card or the same phone/watch to enter and leave. Switching between a phone and its physical bank card can result in duplicate charges. OASA’s payment instructions and FAQ explain the rules; a group can buy separate appropriate tickets instead of relying on one bank card to admit everyone.

Finish the journey to the gate

Have the gate number, ship name and ticket ready before leaving the bus or station. Open the ferry operator’s Piraeus gate map, find your numbered gate, then trace the walk from your actual arrival point. Allow for the walk inside the port as well as reaching its entrance.

Gate access matters for cars, too. For example, Blue Star’s map marks E6 for passengers only and E7 for passengers and vehicles for several of its ferries. If your instructions name E6, agree a suitable road drop-off and continue on foot; do not ask a driver to take you through a pedestrian-only entrance. Confirm your ship’s current gate with the operator, as assignments can change.

For gates along the covered route, the port authority confirms a free port bus between E1 and E5, with arrival information on signs at stops. Check the displayed destination and next arrival before relying on it. If your gate is elsewhere, ask port staff for the walking route or the appropriate connection.

As a timing example, suppose your ferry leaves at 17:30 and requires you at embarkation by 16:30. An X96 departing at 15:00 uses that entire 90-minute interval on the bus alone. It leaves no time for traffic, walking or locating the ship. Choose an earlier connection rather than building a plan around the average journey time.

If your flight is delayed

Recalculate from when you are actually ready to leave arrivals. If you have missed the through metro on a work night, compare X96 with a car to your confirmed gate. If neither leaves realistic time before boarding closes, contact the ferry company or ticket agent about the next sailing and your ticket conditions before spending money on a rushed connection.

Also check your ferry company’s service notices before leaving the airport: a changed sailing can matter more than the road journey. Save your ferry ticket, gate map and the company’s contact details offline. Keep medication, documents and anything needed during the crossing in a bag you can carry comfortably through the port. The most useful backup is a viable later sailing or overnight plan, not a faster journey that still arrives after boarding ends.
