A car booking in the Venice area is not a ride through the canals. Start with your hotel’s exact location: Mestre on the mainland, an address near Piazzale Roma, or somewhere deeper in historic Venice. That choice decides whether a road journey is enough or whether you also need a boat or a walk.
Where a road transfer can take you
Marco Polo Airport lists road taxis and chauffeur services in its official transport guide. Choose a road-accessible destination, such as your Mestre hotel or an agreed handover point at Piazzale Roma. A car quote does not establish that a water taxi is included.
Before comparing transport options, send your accommodation a simple question: “Where can a car leave us, and how do we get from there to your entrance?” Save the answer alongside the address. A map pin on a canal can look close to a road while still leaving an awkward last leg with suitcases.
Choose the destination before the vehicle
| Your destination | Journey to compare | Detail to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Mestre hotel | Road journey to the hotel, or bus to Mestre plus the final connection | The exact hotel entrance |
| Hotel near Piazzale Roma | Road or airport bus journey, then a walk | Bridges, steps and the route with bags |
| Hotel elsewhere in historic Venice | Airport boat, or a road journey followed by a boat or walk | The correct landing and final approach |
Marco Polo Airport lists ACTV line 5 and ATVO express buses to Piazzale Roma, and ACTV line 15 and ATVO express services to Mestre station. Those are different destinations. Its official city-connections guide also lists road taxis and chauffeur services.
At Piazzale Roma, use the city’s terminal guide to plan the connection to the waterbus landings. Do not compare a car fare to Piazzale Roma with a boat fare nearer your hotel until you have included the remaining journey.
Taking a boat directly from the airport
For the airport dock, follow the blue Water Transport signs to the terminal’s first floor and the Moving Walkway. The airport’s water-transport guide distinguishes Alilaguna public boats from private motorboats. Choose the line and stop for your accommodation; a list of Venice stops does not mean every departure serves each one.
Alilaguna’s published airport–Venice fare is €18 one way or €32 return. Four passengers paying the standard fare therefore spend €72 one way or €128 on four return tickets. This is our calculation from the fare, not a private-boat quote. The operator includes one large bag and one hand bag per ticket and lists a €4 supplement for each additional bag. Check the ticket conditions before paying.
For a private boat, ask for the total price and the agreed landing before boarding. Ask your hotel whether that landing reaches its entrance or leaves a walk. If your party needs step-free access or help with bags, explain the requirement rather than assuming a boat or car will solve it.
Three details to get in writing
- The end of the road leg, if there is one.
- The boat service and landing, if included, plus any final walk.
- What happens if your flight is late: contact details, waiting terms and any charges.
Keep road and water prices separate until you have an explicit combined offer. This makes a cheaper-looking quote easier to judge and avoids finding out at the handover that another ticket is needed.
Compare a transfer for the road leg
If you want a car from Marco Polo Airport to Mestre or an agreed road-accessible handover point, get transfer offers on GetTransfer.com. Enter the exact destination, passengers and bags, then check the pickup and total price in the offer. For a hotel in historic Venice, arrange the water or walking leg explicitly; do not assume it comes with the car booking.
