Transforming the Entrance Experience

The National Art Library has struggled to create a welcoming entrance. Its grand facade, while impressive, doesn't always convey the openness the Library wants to project.

The Library's doors, at the top of a grand staircase, are usually closed to keep out drafts and noise. Stepping inside, visitors find themselves in a quiet reading room, perfect for studying. But the peace is sometimes broken by people heading to the busier inner 'centre' room.

The Library's amazing collection and history add to the atmosphere. Museum visitors often pause at the entrance to snap photos of the interiors but don't always grasp what the Library offers.

A Friendly Welcome at the Entrance

To make things more welcoming, the Library created the role of ‘Library Welcome Host’ volunteers. These friendly people are stationed just outside the Library, ready to offer information, advice, or just a pleasant chat.

The response to the job posting last June was huge. As a result, ten volunteers were trained and started in August.

Training for Success

The Volunteer Welcome Hosts received thorough training, including:

  • An overview of the Library’s history and collections.
  • Guidance on how to get around the various databases.
  • Detailed instructions on how to apply for Library membership.
  • Information regarding the V&A’s values and expectations for visitor experiences.
  • A warm introduction to the V&A volunteer community.

For questions outside their training, Library staff and security are always available.

The Volunteers' Impact

The volunteers have made a big difference. They handle all sorts of questions, from specific research inquiries to directions around the Museum. Their patience and knowledge were especially helpful in late August when lots of fans visited the Museum to see Taylor Swift's costumes. Many were guided by the volunteers.

Regular check-ins with the Welcome Hosts keep the administration informed about common questions, visitor needs, and how to better support the volunteers. This feedback has been incredibly valuable, leading to improvements in the overall visitor experience.

Building a Community

The new volunteers have been welcomed with open arms, and hopefully they feel like they're part of the V&A volunteer community. Their hard work makes it possible to build lasting connections with visitors.

Looking to the Future

Because the program has been so successful, they plan to reopen applications for new volunteers this Spring. If you're interested, keep an eye on the volunteer page. Previous openings got so much attention that applications had to close after just three days.

A Grateful Acknowledgment

A big thank you to the volunteers who support the Library. Their dedication and enthusiasm over the past six months have made a significant impact on Library users and have enriched the experience for many Museum visitors. As a result, more people leave with a greater understanding of the National Art Library and the V&A.

In Conclusion

The National Art Library is working hard to improve visitor experiences with the help of friendly, informed volunteers. This not only informs visitors but also creates a sense of community. Reviews are helpful, but nothing beats personal experience.

Tip: If you're planning a visit, check the V&A website for the latest information on volunteer availability and any special events that might be happening.
