Sydney to Canberra by Private Car: The Route, Timing, and When It Makes Sense

The drive from Sydney to Canberra is 280 kilometres. In normal conditions it takes between two hours forty-five minutes and three hours fifteen minutes via the M31 Hume Highway and Federal Highway — mostly dual carriageway, passing through Goulburn at roughly the halfway point. Traffic is light outside of Friday afternoon and Sunday evening, when the Sydney–Canberra corridor fills with the regular commute between the two cities.
Why Not Fly?
Flights operate between Sydney and Canberra, served by Qantas and Rex. But the economics only work in your favour if you calculate total door-to-door time. Sydney Airport (SYD) requires you to be there 45 minutes before a domestic departure. Canberra Airport (CBR) is small but you still need transport at both ends. By the time you account for the airport commute, check-in, security, boarding, the short flight, and the taxi from CBR, the total journey time is comparable to a direct private car on many itineraries — without the luggage restrictions, without the schedule dependency, and without the premium that last-minute domestic bookings on this route typically carry.
Flying makes sense if your trip is time-critical and the timing works precisely. A direct private car makes sense for most other scenarios, and particularly for groups of two or more where the per-person economics shift.
The Route
- Sydney CBD or Airport → M5 → M31 Hume Highway south.
- Goulburn: roughly the halfway point, 190km from Sydney. A natural stop if the journey warrants one.
- M31 continues as the Federal Highway from the NSW/ACT border into Canberra.
- Total: approximately 280km, 2h45–3h15 in normal traffic.
The route is straightforward and well-maintained — dual carriageway or motorway for most of its length, with no urban congestion points between Sydney's outer suburbs and Canberra's outskirts.
Departure Points and Canberra Destinations
Private transfers on this route typically depart from Sydney CBD, Sydney Airport, or specific suburbs. Arrivals in Canberra commonly go to the Civic area, the Parliamentary Triangle, the Australian War Memorial, specific embassies, government departments, or Canberra Airport if the return leg is by air.
For political and diplomatic travel — and Canberra is a destination where this is common — a private transfer provides the discretion that a coach or shared shuttle doesn't. Government departments in the Parliamentary Triangle are clustered in a way that makes a private car more efficient than street taxis between buildings.
Pricing and Booking
Private transfer pricing for this route typically runs AUD 350–520 for a standard saloon, depending on the operator and the exact pickup location within Sydney. For a group of three or four, the per-person cost is comparable to or below four domestic air tickets booked on the day of travel — with none of the airport overhead.
Advance booking is recommended for Friday afternoons heading south and Sunday afternoons heading north — the busiest windows, when drivers book out earlier. For other times, 24–48 hours is generally sufficient.
The Bus Alternative
Murrays and Greyhound run Sydney–Canberra coach services. Journey time is 3h30 to 4h30 depending on the service. It works for solo travellers with minimal luggage who have flexibility on timing. For anyone travelling with colleagues, heading to a specific Canberra address rather than the central bus terminal, or carrying more than a backpack, the private transfer covers the gaps the coach doesn't.
