Record Tourist Engagement During Holiday Period

Tourism Surges During the May Day Holiday
The five-day May Day holiday proved a popular time to travel, with significant increases in both domestic and international tourists at major destinations.
Popular Destinations: A Traveler's Perspective
Local authorities reported bustling conditions in many cities. One traveler recounted their four-day trip to Huangshan city in Anhui province, famous for its mountains and hot springs: "It was crowded, which made getting around a challenge, but the atmosphere was great, and the street food was a highlight."
They also commented on transit challenges: "It took us an hour to travel one kilometer, but the views made it worth it. We might visit again on a regular weekend." Huangshan was just one of many destinations drawing crowds.
Visitor Numbers: By the Numbers
Data from Zhejiang province shows that approximately 23.75 million tourists visited by the fourth day of the holiday, a 12.9% increase compared to last year. Hubei province reported that its top scenic spots welcomed about 12.17 million visitors during the first three days, a 24.15% year-on-year rise.
Managing Crowds and Boosting International Tourism
To ensure a reasonable experience, some well-known tourist spots limited visitor numbers. The rise in international tourism suggests that recent improvements in entry rules and tax refunds are having a positive effect. In Chengdu, the border inspection office reported that on May 1, the second day of the holiday, the city welcomed over 8,700 international visitors, almost 2,400 of whom were foreigners.
Airport Expectations Met
Airports in Beijing and Shanghai anticipated increased international arrivals during May Day, and that's what happened. The Beijing General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection projected around 310,000 border crossings during the holiday. Beijing Capital International Airport expected roughly 45,000 travelers each day—a total of about 225,000 throughout the holiday, a 9.7% increase relative to the previous month.
Travel Agency Insights
Travel agencies also reported positive trends. One travel portal saw a 141% increase in inbound tourism bookings compared to the previous year on the first day of the holiday. Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Beijing continue to be popular choices for international travelers.
Before the holiday, the agency saw a 173% increase in inbound tourism bookings for trips during the May Day holiday. Social media influencers, like the You-Tube star Darren Jason Watkins Jr., also known as IShowSpeed, may have played a role; his travel videos have drawn attention from foreign visitors.
Influencers can sway travel choices, but nothing beats seeing a place for yourself, right?
If you are planning a trip, here's a tip: If you're arriving at an airport late at night, pre-booking transport is a good idea. Honestly, the taxi queues at some airports can be ridiculous, and you'll be glad you skipped the wait.
