For a cruise from Civitavecchia, plan Fiumicino Airport → train or road journey → your ship's terminal → check-in. A checked regional-train example took 1 hour 50 minutes with one change and started at €11 per adult; the separate station-to-ship shuttle adds €6 and about 15 minutes, plus its wait. That makes €17 per adult on this example. A car avoids the rail change, but still needs the correct ship and port drop-off.

Put the boarding deadline in your plan first

Save the ship name, sailing date, terminal or meeting point and the cruise line's latest check-in time. The sailing time is later than the deadline you need to work towards.

If landing on sailing day, allow for leaving the aircraft, passport control where applicable, bags, reaching airport transport, connections and the port arrival process. If there is no room for a flight delay, consider arriving the previous day. Contact the cruise line if a delay threatens check-in, as well as updating whoever is collecting you.

By train: use a complete itinerary with the Rome change

Follow airport signs to Fiumicino Aeroporto railway station. For Civitavecchia, search the Trenitalia planner for the complete journey, rather than automatically buying Leonardo Express to Termini. The airport's rail page distinguishes Leonardo Express from the FL1 regional service; Port Mobility explains the FL1/FL5 connection via Roma Trastevere or Roma Ostiense.

Our search for 31 October 2026 showed a regional itinerary 10:12–12:02, one change, from €11 for one adult. Read the interchange and connection time for the train you select. That 1-hour-50-minute example ends at Civitavecchia station, not your ship.

If your destination field is Civitavecchia Porto, Trenitalia can include the Portlink bus in the journey; its official explanation says the bus adds €6 to the selected rail fare. Check that your ticket includes it before buying another shuttle. Portlink serves cruise terminals, with separate arrangements for the Autostrade del Mare piers.

From Civitavecchia station to the ship

If your train ticket ends at Civitavecchia station, go to the square outside the station for the CSP cruise shuttle. Port Mobility lists:

  • €6 per person each way, with tickets sold on board.
  • About 15 minutes to cruise ships.
  • Departures about every 20–25 minutes on cruise arrival/departure days; check the day's hours for an early or late arrival.

Keep the ship and terminal details ready when boarding. This paid station connection is different from the ordinary free shuttle inside the port. The free service does not make the railway-station pickup free.

Train and shuttle versus a taxi or booked car

Using the €11 train example and a separately purchased €6 station shuttle:

Full-fare adults Train + station shuttle, one way
One €17
Two €34
Four €68

Use each traveller's actual rail category for children or other discounts. Add the connection, shuttle wait and cruise check-in to the travel time even when the tickets are already paid for.

Roma Mobilità's taxi tariff lists €130 per vehicle, including supplements, for the direct Fiumicino Airport–Civitavecchia Porto route. It applies to Rome municipal taxis: white vehicles with a TAXI roof sign, Roma Capitale identification and a licence number. Use the airport rank and confirm the tariff, passenger/luggage capacity and destination before departure. Extra pickups or detours are a different itinerary. This published taxi fare is separate from any GetTransfer offer.

For a booked car, give the ship, terminal, flight and luggage, then ask where the vehicle is authorised to drop you. Include road charges in the total and establish whether a port shuttle remains after the drop-off. That answer matters more than the label “port transfer”.

Cases, delays and the trip back

On the train, allow enough connection time to move your cases and check accessibility if required. In a car, confirm boot space as well as seats. Keep your passport, medication and boarding information with you.

After a flight delay, establish with the cruise line whether boarding is still possible before paying for a different plan. On the return, allow for disembarkation and collecting luggage; the ship's scheduled arrival is not the time you will be outside with your cases.

If spending time in Rome first, use our Leonardo Express guide for that city journey.
