Cancún Airport to Tulum: Town Bus or Beach Hotel?

Staying near Tulum’s town bus station? Start with the ADO coach. Staying on the beach? Compare the coach plus a hotel pickup with one car to reception. First read your flight ticket: this route starts at CUN, Cancún Airport. If it says TQO, Tulum Airport, you need a different pickup and price.
Save your hotel’s entrance on your phone before flying. The airport coach takes you to town. For a beach hotel or a property further out, you still need to arrange the ride from the bus station.
Why the airport code matters
Your holiday may be in Tulum, but your plane might land in Cancún. Those three letters on your ticket matter: in the GetTransfer bookings we reviewed, the median route was 120 km from CUN, compared with 42 km from Tulum’s own airport, TQO. Compare the flight and the onward journey together—and make sure every transfer quote starts at the airport you will actually use.
About the figures: completed GetTransfer outward trips, October 2025–September 2026, to the Tulum town-and-beach area selected by name and map coordinates. Return legs and airport-to-airport trips were excluded. The median is the middle recorded distance in each group; these were different bookings, not two routes to an identical hotel. Distances come from booking records, not GPS tracks, and do not predict journey time.
The ADO coach: price, time and frequency
ADO’s route guide lists departures from Terminals 2, 3 and 4, arriving at the town station on Avenida Tulum. It gives an approximate fare of MXN 475 per passenger, a ride of 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 5 minutes and service roughly every 1–2 hours. That makes the wait worth checking before you buy, especially after a late flight.
To buy a ticket, follow the booking link on ADO’s page and choose your terminal, date and passenger ages. Check the fare and departure shown for that journey. Leave time after landing for arrival formalities and collecting bags.
Find the boarding point at CUN
- Terminal 2: after exiting, turn right and follow the pavement towards the end.
- Terminal 3: continue outside towards the red buses on the right.
- Terminal 4: turn left towards the covered walkway.
Following ADO’s directions above, find its counter and ask for Tulum town. Check the boarding time for your terminal: the coach calls at several terminals, each with its own departure time. ADO lists a 25 kg checked-baggage allowance; check heavier luggage or equipment before paying and keep your baggage tag.
Town hotel or beach hotel: finish the calculation
| Where you stay | Trip to compare |
|---|---|
| Near the town station | Coach, then a walk that works with your bags or a short ride |
| Beach hotel or outlying property | Coach plus an agreed hotel pickup, or a direct car to reception |
| Late arrival without a suitable coach | A confirmed hotel ride, or an airport-area overnight stay plus next-day transport |
Using the guide fare, two full-fare travellers spend MXN 950 on coach tickets; four spend MXN 1,900. Add the onward ride and any applicable luggage charge. For a fair comparison, ask for one car price covering everyone, their bags and the ride to your hotel entrance.
For a beach stay, get the missing last-leg price from the hotel before booking: “We are [people] with [bags], arriving at the ADO station at about [time]. What is the total price to reception, and where will the driver meet us?” Add that price to the bus tickets before deciding which option works best for you.
If your flight is late
Check the ticket’s change conditions and ADO’s next available departure. Contact the hotel pickup too: moving only the coach leaves someone waiting at the wrong time. If no departure works, agree the total price of a replacement airport-to-hotel ride before leaving the terminal and confirm that the hotel can receive you late.
For the return, work backwards through both legs. The time printed on the coach ticket is when it leaves town; a beach hotel needs an earlier pickup. Use your airline’s required airport-arrival time when choosing the coach.
