Colombo Airport to Kandy: Bus Connections, Rail Changes or a Car?

The airport bus is a connection to Colombo, not a confirmed direct bus to Kandy. From Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), decide whether you want to change transport in Colombo or arrange a road journey to your accommodation. That decision matters more than a low fare for the first leg.
What bus 187 actually covers
The airport’s official luxury-bus page lists air-conditioned route 187 to Colombo Fort, operating 24 hours a day. It gives the boarding point as the Departure Terminal Outer Porch, a fare of LKR 325 per passenger and an additional LKR 325 for baggage exceeding 23 kg. Confirm the baggage charge for your particular bags before boarding.
The airport describes the ride to Colombo/Fort railway station as approximately 50 minutes. That is its estimate for the airport leg, not your total time to Kandy. Waiting, onward transport and the journey to your hotel still need to be added.
For four passengers paying the listed standard fare, the airport leg costs LKR 1,300 before baggage charges: four × LKR 325. This is our calculation, not a fare to Kandy. Add every passenger’s onward ticket and the final ride to your address before comparing it with one car quote.
Plan the connection before boarding

For an onward bus, check the Sri Lanka Transport Board’s official service and booking information and confirm the departure point. The airport’s page does not provide a Kandy timetable or through fare. Do not board 187 assuming that a Kandy connection is included or that its last departure will fit your landing time.
The October rail change to understand
The government’s 1 October 2026 announcement said the Peradeniya–Kandy rail section remained out of service while bridge repairs continued. Its 2 October notice describes restored services from Colombo Fort to Peradeniya and Gampola. Those notices do not establish a through train to Kandy station.
Check the latest Sri Lanka Railways notices and the service for your travel date before committing to a connection. If your train ends at Peradeniya, plan a separate road leg to your accommodation. A familiar route name in an older timetable is not confirmation that the full route is operating.
Arranging a car from the airport
The airport lists its supervised taxi counters in the arrivals lobby and arrivals porch. Ask for the price to your exact Kandy address and what it includes. A general airport fare or a price to Colombo does not price the journey you need.
For any road booking, send the accommodation’s full address and map pin, your flight number, passengers and bags. If you want a food stop or another visit on the way, agree it before accepting the offer. Ask the accommodation which entrance a vehicle should use and keep a contact number available for arrival.
