Boston to Provincetown: Compare the Whole Journey

A fast ferry is an appealing start to a Provincetown break: it crosses the bay and arrives beside the town centre. But a ferry fare is not the entire cost from Logan Airport, and a late flight can leave you without a sailing to catch. Start with the date and arrival time, then compare the complete journey for everyone travelling.
Travel alert for Friday, 23 October 2026: Bay State has cancelled its 13:00 Boston and 15:00 Provincetown ferries because of high winds and seas. Its notice lists replacement coaches from Boston at 12:30 and 13:00, and from Provincetown at 15:00. Read the operator’s current notice and your booking message for boarding instructions; do not assume these coaches leave from South Station.
Choose what matters for this trip
| Option | Strongest reason to consider it | Add to the headline price or time |
|---|---|---|
| Seasonal ferry | A town-centre stay without a car | Correct Boston dock, boarding margin and final destination |
| Bus | A dated itinerary and a useful price benchmark | Any connection and the complete route to Provincetown |
| Car or private transfer | A door-to-door group journey or a departure outside public schedules | Full vehicle cost, traffic allowance and, if driving yourself, parking |
For a holiday mostly in central Provincetown, a car may spend much of its time parked. For travel around the Cape, its usefulness continues after arrival. Price those two holidays differently.

The ferry ticket decides the Boston dock
Bay State Cruise Company uses Commonwealth Pier at 200 Seaport Boulevard. Boston Harbor City Cruises uses Long Wharf. Both arrive at MacMillan Wharf in Provincetown. Enter the operator's dock in the journey from Logan; “Provincetown ferry” is not a precise enough destination. Bay State directions, City Cruises route information.
City Cruises gives an average 95-minute sailing and asks passengers to arrive 30 minutes before departure. Add baggage collection at Logan and the separate journey to the dock. Keep the same calculation in mind when returning for a flight.

The 2026 fare example that makes a group comparison useful
Bay State's published adult return is $128 plus a $5 fuel surcharge per leg, making $138 per adult. Two adults therefore pay $276, and four adults $552, for the ferry return before optional extras and transport to or from the docks. Its listed one-way adult fare becomes $92–107 after the surcharge. 2026 schedule and fares.
These are Bay State figures, not prices for both operators. City Cruises uses departure-specific pricing. Compare each operator's actual offer for your dates, ages, bags and any bicycles.
A car comparison must also cover the same return journey and group. Dividing the whole-car total by four can make the comparison easier to read, but preserve the total and check luggage capacity. No transfer saving can be calculated from the ferry fare alone.
Autumn changes the timetable
Bay State's daily 2026 season runs 16 May–18 October. Its 23 October–15 November timetable normally runs Friday–Sunday, with an additional Thursday service on 29 October: Boston departures are 13:00 Friday and 08:30 on Saturday and Sunday, with Provincetown returns at 15:00. The extra Thursday follows Friday’s 13:00 outward and 15:00 return departures. Friday's scheduled ferry arrival is 14:40, so it is a poor pattern for a same-day visit. Check the dated schedule before building an autumn itinerary around the main-season service.
If your flight reaches Boston after the last usable departure, compare an available road journey with a Boston overnight. Add hotel and next-day travel costs to the overnight option. A nominally cheap ticket you cannot reach is not a useful offer.
Know what happens if the boat cannot sail
Bay State's FAQ describes replacement coaches for rough-weather cancellations. Read the revised departure and arrival information: a coach can leave earlier than the booked sailing, and the operator says it aims to reach Provincetown at the same time or earlier. Do not assume the ferry's boarding time still applies. This arrangement should not be assumed for another operator.
For passenger changes, Bay State distinguishes a change or travel credit from a refund. Check the specific fare's conditions before committing to an alternative. Keep medication and anything needed during the journey accessible rather than in luggage stored away by crew.
Search the bus all the way to Provincetown
Use a dated Peter Pan itinerary from Logan or Boston to Provincetown and read any connection. The Provincetown stop is on Ryder Street Extension by the MacMillan Pier parking area; tickets should be bought before departure, and the operator asks passengers to signal the approaching bus.
If your bus ticket specifies South Station as the departure point, our Logan Airport to South Station guide explains the SL1 journey and how to find the onward bus terminal. A ticket departing directly from Logan or a ferry dock calls for a different starting point.
Plymouth & Brockton's routes to Hyannis or Woods Hole do not by themselves complete the journey to Provincetown. Include the onward segment if assembling a connection.
For a direct road option, compare GetTransfer offers for your group. Enter the real pickup and destination, both dates if returning, and all luggage. That gives you a complete offer to compare with the ferry or bus total. Confirm availability, the meeting point and waiting terms before booking.
