Travel Advice for Tourists in the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands have experienced significant weather disruptions due to Storm Olivier, which struck the region, resulting in heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Lanzarote, in particular, endured the most severe impact, with various tourist areas facing severe flooding.

With the Easter holiday looming, this could substantially affect travel plans to this popular destination.

Governments across Europe have revised their travel advisories regarding the Canary Islands. Here’s what travelers should be aware of regarding safety and travel insurance.

Intense Weather Conditions in Lanzarote

Storm Olivier has caused extensive damage, flooding hotels, homes, and roads across Lanzarote.

In a span of just two hours on April 12, as much as 60 liters of rain inundated the island.

The Island Emergency Consortium reported that tourist hotspots like Costa Teguise, San Bartolomé, and Arrecife on the eastern side of Lanzarote were the hardest hit.

Footage from the storm shows vehicles partially submerged in water while local streams transformed into treacherous rapids.

Assessing Safety for Travelers to Lanzarote

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) updated its guidance regarding travel to Lanzarote.

“Heavy rainfall and flooding in Lanzarote occurred earlier today (April 13, 2025), particularly affecting Costa Teguise, San Bartolomé, and Arrecife,” states the latest advisory.

“Services across the island are disrupted. Certain hotels are experiencing power outages, and some roads are currently impassable due to mud.”

Travelers in Lanzarote or those planning visits are urged to heed local authority instructions and stay updated with weather advisories.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Ireland has issued a general alert for travel in Spain.

“Spain can experience extreme weather, including flooding, which may impact travel itineraries. Travelers are advised to check for updates on severe weather alerts from the Spanish Meteorological Agency, AEMET,” the notice explains.

“Individuals should verify the latest weather information and heed local government guidance before embarking on their journeys.”

Current Status of Travel to the Canary Islands

Despite some interruptions last week, Lanzarote Airport has returned to normal operations with flights scheduled on time.

The state of emergency declared in Lanzarote on Saturday was lifted at 7 AM the following day.

“Following the cessation of flooding caused by rain on April 12, the emergency situation has concluded in the municipalities of Arrecife, Teguise, and San Bartolomé,” the government announced.

Other islands within the archipelago, inclusive of tourist destinations like Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura, have reportedly escaped significant damage.

Forecasts predict cloudy skies and light rain will persist throughout the day.

Understanding Your Refund Rights If You Cancel Your Trip

Since foreign governments have not issued any ‘no-go’ travel alerts for the Canary Islands, travelers are not automatically entitled to refunds if they choose to cancel their trips, a situation known as ‘disinclination to travel’.

Refund eligibility typically arises only if a flight is cancelled by the airline or if a travel accommodation becomes unavailable due to flooding.

For those who booked through a travel agency or tour operator, it is advisable to contact them directly to discuss available options.

Additionally, some insurance policies offer coverage for natural disasters that hinder travel to a holiday destination. Thus, it’s important to review policy details and consult with providers regarding potential claims.
