IndiGo Cancels Over 200 Delhi and Mumbai Flights Following Flight Duty Regulation Updates

IndiGo Flight Disruptions Across Key Indian Airports

IndiGo, one of India's largest domestic carriers, has faced significant operational challenges, leading to the cancellation of more than 200 flights on a recent Saturday from Delhi and Mumbai airports. This comes shortly after a major wave of cancellations affecting over 1,000 flights on the previous day. The airline temporarily secured relaxations in new flight duty norms for cockpit crew, yet disruptions continued to affect passengers significantly.

Scope of Flight Cancellations

On this particular Saturday, cancellations were almost evenly split between the two hubs: Mumbai saw 109 flight disruptions (51 arrivals and 58 departures), while Delhi experienced 106 cancellations (54 departures and 52 arrivals). Prior to this, Friday had already witnessed a staggering number, with IndiGo grounding over 1,000 flights nationwide as it adapted to regulatory changes.

Airport Departures Cancelled Arrivals Cancelled Total Flights Cancelled
Mumbai 58 51 109
Delhi 54 52 106
Total 112 103 215

Regulatory Changes Impacting Airline Operations

The recent cancellations trace back to newly enforced flight duty and rest period norms for pilots, initially set by regulatory authorities and mandated by court directives. After significant disruptions, IndiGo obtained temporary relief in these rules. Key relaxations included adjusting the window for defining night duty from 12 am–6 am to 12 am–5 am and increasing allowable night landings for pilots from two to six within this period. These exemptions were critical for the airline to manage its scheduling pressures but stirred controversy among pilot associations.

Pilots’ Concerns and Industry Response

The Airlines’ Pilots Association (ALPA) India voiced strong objections, labeling the regulatory leniencies as "selective and unsafe." The association stressed that such relaxations compromise safety and regulatory fairness, placing millions of passengers at potential risk. Following discussions with the Ministry of Civil Aviation and pilot organizations, the Ministry announced a temporary postponement of the strict implementation of these revised flight duty norms. ALPA India criticized this move as contradictory to court guidelines that emphasize fatigue mitigation for pilots based on aviation science principle
