Highlights of Last Week's News in Fethiye and Surrounding

What's Been Happening?

Lots going on in Fethiye lately! From touching tributes to new tunes in the park, plus some big improvements on the way, there's a real buzz about the place.

Cyclists Remembered

Cyclists from all over Turkey came to Fethiye to pay their respects to İlker Muallim and Özgür Alkan. These guys tragically died in an accident on the Göcek road. The memorial ride, with local politicians and everyday folks joining in, finished up at the Fethiye Courthouse. The timing? It was the same day as a court hearing about the accident.

More than just remembering those lost, the event was about shouting out for safer roads. The riders want a dedicated lane just for cyclists. Makes sense, right?

Bottom line: It was a powerful way to honor the cyclists and push for changes that could save lives.

Music in the Air

The Fethiye Musical Nights are still going strong! This week, everyone headed to Bahriye Üçok Park for a great evening of live music. Adem Kazan and the City Orchestra put on a fantastic show – locals and tourists loved it.

Heads up: these music nights are happening all summer long in different spots around town. Keep an eye out for the next one!

Paragliding Drama

Things got a bit scary up on Babadağ when a paragliding flight went wrong. A pilot and passenger ended up injured after their spare parachute opened way too early. They'd taken off from almost 2,000 meters up, but the passenger panicked, and they crashed into some pretty steep cliffs.

Good news: after a five-hour rescue mission, the Gendarmerie Search and Rescue teams got them both out safely. Ambulances rushed them to local hospitals, and last word is they're stable.

Fethiye's Getting an Upgrade

Big news from AK Party Muğla MP Yakup Otgöz: Fethiye's getting some major infrastructure love! We're talking healthcare, sports, and roads – all getting a boost.

  • A brand new 500-bed Fethiye State Hospital is officially on the cards.
  • The Fethiye Stadium is getting a makeover, and there's money coming for the Seydikemer Youth Centre.
  • New divided highways are planned for the Seydikemer area. That should make getting around a lot easier.

The goal? Better healthcare, better sports facilities, and safer roads. Sounds good to me!

Rain!

Believe it or not, Nif (a part of Fethiye) had some rain! A welcome break from the scorching summer heat. Locals were loving the cool breeze and the sound of raindrops – a nice change from the constant air conditioning.

Trash Troubles in İzmir

Over in Kemalpaşa, İzmir, there's a growing problem with trash piling up. Seems like the local authorities are struggling to keep up with waste disposal. Residents are complaining about the smell and health concerns. Hopefully, they'll get it sorted out soon.

Hot Air Balloons in Cappadocia

Cappadocia is always amazing, but it's extra special right now! The Nevşehir Culture Route Festival is in full swing, with almost 400 events. The highlight? The International Balloon Festival. From August 7 to 10, dozens of hot air balloons painted the sky over Göreme. Seriously stunning.

Balloon tourism is getting more and more popular. If you ever get the chance to go, do it!

Fethiyespor Ready to Rumble

Fethiyespor is gearing up for the league season. They just wrapped up their training camp in Kartepe with a win against Kütahyaspor. The coach is feeling confident and wants all the fans to get behind the team.
