Phu Tho’s Journey to Becoming Northern Vietnam’s Vibrant Tourist Hub

Phu Tho: A Northern Gem Expanding Its Tourism Horizons
Phu Tho province has been making impressive strides in tourism, successfully steering its growth by blending international outreach, local enhancements, and strategic advantage gained from recent regional expansions. In the first nine months of 2025 alone, the province attracted approximately 3.65 million visitors, including about 95,000 international tourists, generating close to $480 million in tourism revenue.
This surge outlines a strong comeback and an upward trajectory, powered by the expansion of its administrative borders, which has added more cultural, historical, and natural treasures to its portfolio.
Expanding Territory, Expanding Opportunities
The enlargement of Phu Tho’s territory means it now boasts a wealth of historical relics, vibrant ethnic communities, natural landscapes, and upgraded hospitality options. This creates a ripe environment for a diverse tourism mix, moving beyond the well-trodden paths of spiritual and heritage tourism to developing integrated regional circuits that weave together historical landmarks, ecotourism, resorts, and community-based activities.
“Our approach focuses on crafting a lively and varied tourism portfolio, incorporating upscale eco-resorts, multicultural adventures, and engaging community experiences,” explains Bui Xuan Truong, deputy director of the province’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Visitors might spend a morning kayaking on Hoa Binh Lake, enjoy fishing and local delicacies in the afternoon, then wind down with cultural exchanges and relaxation at premium resorts.
Ambitious Goals for 2030
Phu Tho is setting its sights high, aiming to welcome 18.7 million tourists by 2030, with 7.3 million overnight stays and more than one million international guests, targeting nearly $960 million in tourism earnings. Meeting these targets will require strategic investment, skilled workforce development, and vigorous promotion on the global stage.
Already, the province is actively participating in international tourism fairs, such as the KITS International Tourism Fair in South Korea, showcasing a spectrum of offerings that include spiritual tourism, eco-community travel, resorts, and business event services. This networking opens pathways for foreign investment and boosts international visitor numbers.
Building Stronger Regional Links
Tourism is now a strategic pillar of Phu Tho’s post-merger development. The enlarged administrative space fosters better regional connectivity, tying in iconic sites like the Hung Temple and Xoan Singing heritage with nearby eco-resorts and leisure complexes. This web of attractions forms seamless circuits ideal for international tourists and large-scale events, making Phu Tho a compelling year-round destination.
