Goa’s Mopa Airport Sees 8% Passenger Growth While Dabolim Experiences a 12% Decline

Goa’s aviation landscape is witnessing a remarkable shift with the new Manohar International Airport at Mopa gaining significant traction. Between April and September, it recorded an 8% increase in passenger traffic, handling around 11.3 lakh passengers during the July-September period—almost half of the state's overall air traffic. This contrasts with the older Dabolim International Airport, which has experienced a 12% drop in passenger numbers over the same duration. Such changes are set to influence travel patterns and transfer needs across Goa, shaping how visitors and locals navigate between airports and destinations.

Passenger Traffic Dynamics

Mopa Airport's growth owes much to a robust 18.4% rise in international flyers. The airport’s strategic partnerships and incentives for airlines have expanded international connectivity and routes, featuring 24 domestic and 14 international destinations. The popularity of flights to cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, served by airlines including IndiGo, Air India, Akasa Air, Fly91, and Qatar Airways, underlines Mopa's growing appeal.

Meanwhile, Dabolim airport, which manages a similar volume of daily flights, sees its international routes limited mostly to Bahrain and Dubai. This reduction in international access partly explains the passenger drop, as travelers shift preference to Mopa’s expanded offerings. With Mopa capturing approximately 90% of international traffic through carriers like TUI, Enter Air, Aeroflot, and Uzbekistan Airways, it’s clear where the momentum lies.

Financial and Infrastructure Aspects

While passenger numbers at Mopa grow, its total revenue has declined by 14.5% to INR 84 crore, primarily due to airline incentive programs and revenue-sharing agreements with the state government. Profit margins have similarly shrunk, with profitability dipping to INR 12 crore in the recent quarter from INR 41 crore a year earlier. Despite this, ongoing investments, including hotel projects covering 7.5 lakh square feet near the airport and favorable tariff rulings, signal a promising long-term outlook.
