Traditional Mother’s Day Bazaar in Fethiye

The recent Mother’s Day Bazaar, organized by the Fethiye Tourism Promotion Culture Environment and Education Foundation (FETAV), took place in Beşkaza Square. This delightful two-day event drew considerable interest from both locals and visitors, creating a lively atmosphere.

With the aim of supporting productive mothers, the bazaar offered a platform for them to sell handmade foods and crafts. Around 270 stands displayed an impressive range of products, from delicious food offerings to intricate jewelry and bags. The funds raised from this lively bazaar will go toward student scholarships, fostering education in the community.

The vibrant ambiance was enhanced by various entertainment options, including dance performances that provided a festive backdrop for shoppers. Visitors were particularly drawn to the handmade products, appreciating the unique craftsmanship showcased.

According to FETAV Director Dilek Dinçer, the event was a grand success, celebrating the contributions of mothers and engaging the community through art and dance. “Our traditional Mother’s Day event was not just about shopping; it was a celebration filled with rhythm and joy,” Dinçer remarked.

Increase in Loggerhead Turtle Nests at İztuzu Beach

In a recent update, it was noted that the number of endangered loggerhead sea turtle nests observed on İztuzu Beach has reached 10. This notable increase was reported by the Sea Turtle Research, Rescue, and Rehabilitation Center (DEKAMER).

DEKAMER teams, along with volunteers, have diligently recorded these nests during the ongoing nesting season. To ensure the safety of the vulnerable eggs from natural predators, protective cages have been installed. Careful monitoring of the hatching process is also underway.

As per Fatih Polat, a Project Assistant Biologist at DEKAMER, the protective measures are supported by the General Directorate for the Protection of Natural Assets under the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change. The first nest of this season was discovered on April 29, with the current count standing at ten.

Polat indicated that the incubation duration for the eggs ranges between 45 to 60 days. “The peak nesting activity is expected around June, with hatchlings emerging around mid-July,” he stated, highlighting the significance of İztuzu Beach as a critical conservation site for the loggerhead turtle in the Mediterranean.

Community Cleanup Initiative in Marmaris

In a proactive step for the environment, residents and officials in Marmaris participated in a clean-up drive under the national initiative, “The Forest is Mine.” This campaign, spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, not only aimed to clean up forest areas but also raised awareness about fire prevention. Remarkably, within just one hour, participants filled a trailer with garbage from a 500-square-meter area in the Aktaş region.

Marmaris, frequently impacted by forest fires, witnessed strong community participation, highlighting the collaborative effort to remove flammable items from surroundings. Before the initiative commenced, Marmaris Forest Enterprise Manager Gökhan Şahin underlined the importance of eliminating fire hazards: “We take pride in being the first to implement this campaign in Turkey and will continue to lead the way.”

The initiative underscored a sense of shared responsibility toward preserving nature for future generations. District Governor Nurullah Kaya, also participating in the cleanup, emphasized taking ownership of natural spaces. Young volunteers, like 12-year-old Mustafa Güldal, echoed similar sentiments regarding the impact of littering on the environment.
